"I was twelve years old when the Germans forced the Jews in our town from their homes into the central square. As I stood with my family, my mother said, “You have to survive! Run!” I pretended to not be Jewish by putting a scarf over my hair so I looked like a peasant and I escaped. I ran and ran until I came to a village where I hid.
When I came back to our town, I saw some of my friends, dead.

My parents and brother were gone. I was alone."
