John Franklin

"Most of the camp guards were brutal and sadistic, laughing as they beat or killed inmates, seeming to enjoy destroying lives. Many prisoners died from illness or starvation, their naked bodies dumped in mass graves.
Rarely, someone tried to escape. Never successfully, as I remember. The barbed wire and guard towers with machine guns prevented that.
Sometimes a prisoner couldn’t take it any longer and would throw himself on the electrified fence, dying immediately.

As for me, I thought only of surviving."
